Description

This is a photo I took at my school today - featuring what is known as "The Ice Sculpture" or "The Tree-cicle".

This is what has been said about it!

"The very cold weather and the school fountain have produced an unusual ice sculpture which has fascinated students and staff alike. Please see the photo gallery for more pictures.

As staff and students have continued to marvel at the erroneously named Ice Sculpture, one of our self-appointed Geography experts breaks his silence to comment on its formation.

"Well it’s actually rather fascinating really," he intones, the sun glinting off his golden locks. "You have to look at the direction that the here-fore-after to be known as ‘tree-cicle’ has formed in. Using a little local knowledge you can tell it has formed to the South West of the fountain, which means that the wind must have been blowing from the North East. This direction means we’re getting cold air from the polar regions, the source of our recent cold snap. Had we got our usual, milder south-westerly winds there probably wouldn’t be quite as much excitement over what would be a small damp patch on the far bank." He pauses to take breath after such an extravagantly long sentence. "But the really interesting part is the freezing process itself. As a relatively large body of water the pond would require a sustained cold period to cause it to freeze, but once you turn it into tiny airborne droplets it is much easier for the atmosphere to cool, and so with the low overnight temperatures we’ve been experiencing the droplets have been blown by the cold wind, chilling them just below freezing point so that the moment they hit a solid structure – in this case the tree – they crystallise and adhere to the surface, gradually building up in layers much like stalactites in a cave."

Should you wish to find out more about how the same basic process that has formed this beautiful structure can become a deadly hazard in some parts of the world then follow the link to find out more about Ice-storms in Canada! [link]

Our thanks to Mr Staines for interviewing himself for this feature.

If any student thinks they have a great picture that they would like to add to the photo gallery please go to the ICT office."

The most excitement we've had at school in a while! Haha ;D
